Amanda Rothschild is a 29 year old stay-at-home mom to an adorable 20 month old girl named Elle. She absolutely loves fashion and is all about staying chic while staying at home. We got to find out what fashion and beauty secrets take her from day to night!
IN THE DAY:
1. What is your daytime style?
My daytime style is trendy and chic, yet comfortable. My look varies depending on what I am up to on a given day. Chasing after an almost two-year-old makes wearing heels during the day impossible, so I usually don a pair of espadrilles, Chloe flats, or my trusty white converse. On summer days when I’m lunching with friends, you can find me in a romper or a cute sundress. On cooler days I live in my skinny jeans and a casual tee. When I’m running around the city doing errands, or popping into a yoga class, you can find me in yoga pants and a tee. LuluLemon, Michi, Nike, and Running Bare are some of my fave activewear brands. When I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll change it up by experimenting with a super-trendy piece. Last week, I paired my Pitusa pompom beach coverup with a bandeau and wore it out to lunch with friends!
2. What are some of your favourite clothing brands or shops?
Some of my favourite clothing brands include A.L.C, Zara, Iro, Rag & Bone, L’agence, and Wilfred. I can usually be found shopping at Aritzia or Holt Renfrew, but have lately been spending most of my “shopping time” at Saks. I LOVE that they have finally come to Canada and can’t wait for Nordstrom to open up near me this fall.
Favourite Shoe brands: The classics; Jimmy Choo, Saint Laurent, Stuart Weitzman. Some fun brands; Schutz and Soludos
Bags: Celine, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, Givenchy
3. What is your inspiration for your child’s daytime style?
Elle’s daytime style is similar to mine; trendy and chic yet, comfortable. She’s a busy little girl who loves to have fun and look cute doing it! I always put her in outfits that I myself would wear, so rompers and sundresses are staples in her wardrobe. I love dressing her in soft colours and pairing her outfits with adorable shoes. She has the cutest pair of gladiator sandals that she wears whenever I wear mine. She definitely wears more colour than me though and loves anything and everything pink! Elle accessorizes with bows, hats, and sunglasses, and has quite the growing shoe collection! When in doubt, I find a tutu fits every occasion. Elle also LOVES Minnie Mouse, so wherever she goes, so does her stuffed Minnie!
4. What are some of your favourite kid’s clothing brands or shops?
While I do pick up a lot of cute kid’s clothes from local stores like H&M and Zara Kids, I buy most of Elle’s pieces online. I especially love the boutiques that I find on Instagram that are usually based out of Los Angeles and Australia. They have adorable, unique pieces that I usually don’t see in stores. I do love Whistle Kids on Avenue road, though! They always have the latest Chaser and Wildfox items and the cutest MiniMelissa shoes!
Local Stores: H&M, ZARA kids, Whistle Kids, Carbon
Insta boutiques: Little J’Adore, LuluandMilly, Lollitots Fashion, MeixinCouture, Littleedgethreads
Favourite brands: Chaser, Wildfox kids, Gucci Baby, H&M, Zara Kids, Mini Melissa, Salt water sandals, Feiyue
5. What is your beauty routine?
Face: After a quick shower in the morning, I begin my beauty routine by applying Bio Beaute 24 hr moisturizing cream. I like it because it is light and free of harsh chemicals. On sunny days, I blend it with La Roche Posay tinted sunscreen to protect my skin from the sun’s harmful rays. I then curl my eyelashes with my Laura Mercier eyelash curler and apply Bobbi Brown Black Ink eyeliner using a Bobbi Brown eyeliner brush for my signature look. I finish it off with Benefit’s Roller Lash mascara and brush on Dior Bronzer for added glow.
Hair: I can’t live without my straightening iron and curling wand! I usually blow dry my hair at night because I’m always rushing to a kiddie program in the morning! After applying my makeup, I curl the ends of my hair with my wand to create big, loose, waves that I spray with Loreal Elnett Hair spray to make sure they last all day. I always remember to wear a protective glove though because I have learned the hard way just how hot those wands can get!!
6. What are your fav products for you?
I definitely cannot live without these products:
• Shu Uemura eyelash curler
• Bobbi brown-black in eyeliner
• Benefit roller lash mascara
• Dior bronzer
• La Roche tinted sunscreen
• Straightening iron
• Straightening wand (for my signature look: big loose waves)
• Clean & Clear make-up remover wipes (I have tried so many brands and these are by far my fave).
7. What are your favourite products for your child?
• Honest Shampoo & Body Wash – I love that its free of harsh chemicals and smells amazing
• Ihles Paste – for those stubborn diaper rashes
• Baby Wipes!!! I’m finding new uses for these babies every day – I always choose scent free, alcohol-free, paraben and phthalate free
• Aveeno baby sunscreen – I have heard that Sun Bum is also great!
Other Mom Must-haves:
• Bugaboo Buffalo- for strolls in the neighbourhood
• City mini zip – my light-weight stroller that I take all over the world!
• Table toppers – disposable place mats
• Wubanubs – These pacifier-friends have come to the rescue on many occasions
• My iPhone! It’s always on hand to capture every adorable thing (I think) Elle does!
• Coffee!! A grande bold from Starbucks is my go-to pick me up!
IN THE DARK:
8. How do you transition your style from day to night?
Having a little one makes wardrobe changes throughout the day inevitable. It’s amazing how everything my toddler eats somehow ends up on me! When I’m transitioning my look from day to night though, I throw on a pair of amazing heels (Jimmy Choo and Saint Laurent are my faves), a cool leather jacket, skinny jeans and an off the shoulder top! A bag change is always in order, so I often opt for my YSL clutch, Celine Nano, or Chanel bag. In terms of makeup I usually apply a more dramatic layer of eyeliner, and blend in some YSL cream blush for more of an “evening” look.
9. What’s your look for evenings? (night in and/or night out)
Nights in and nights out look very different! When I’m staying home for the evening, I throw on my FreeCity sweats, a cozy Wildfox sweatshirt, pull my hair up into a bun and cuddle up on the couch with my husband and Goldendoodle, Rushton! For a night out, I’m almost always in heels paired with skinny jeans or a dress. I tend to wear my hair down with soft waves, sometimes styling it pin straight for a more polished look.
10. Where do you get your evening style inspiration?
I definitely get a lot of my style inspo from various fashion bloggers whom I follow on Instagram. I love the way SomethingNavy, AmberFillerup, and blankItinerary pull outfits together. I also follow Liketoknowit for some great fashion tips and can always look to my super-stylish sis, Ashley, for the latest and greatest fashion trends!
11. How do you transition your child’s style from day to night?
When out and about with Elle, I always make sure to bring extra layers and a few change of clothes to transition her from day to night. Living in Toronto, our weather changes so quickly so mommies have to be prepared! I carry all of her extra things in the cutest monogrammed pink knapsack from You Name It Baby!
At home, after a warm bath, Minnie Mouse pjs, a muslin sleep sack, and Elle’s favourite Wubanub pacifier friends make bedtime extra cozy.
12. As a stylish mom to be – what were your pregnancy looks?
Being pregnant with Elle was such a special time in my life! I loved watching my baby belly grow and it was so much fun to show it off! Staying chic while you’re expecting can be a challenge though. A lot of maternity clothes look matronly, and that was so not my vibe! I ended up buying a lot of non-maternity items in larger sizes that were stretchy and offered me room to grow! I also discovered the amazing Ani + Wren boutique in Summerhill which became my go-to maternity store for pieces that were stylish, flattering, and anything but matronly!
13. What are your weekends like?
Our weekends are all about family time. Either we are at home eating french toast and entertaining family or friends, or are walking along Yonge street or Eglinton. We make multiple trips to the park. Once Elle is tucked in, Adam and I order in and open a bottle of our favourite red wine.
14. What do you and your partner do for fun?
Adam and I love to travel. Prior to having Elle, we visited places such as Bora Bora, Paris, and Italy. Now that we have a toddler, our travel choices have changed slightly. When Elle was four months old, we did take her to Hawaii. It was an ambitious trip with a newborn, but we had an amazing time! Last summer, Elle got to stay with her grandparents while we spent five days in London, England.
Our favourite thing to do is to just spend time together. Whether we are binge-watching a series at home or going for a romantic dinner at Sotto Sotto, we love just being together. As my dad always says, “It’s not what you do, but who you do it with.”
15. What do you do for girl’s night?
I am so blessed to have such incredible friends!! Once a month, I leave Adam on daddy-duty and go out for Tacos and Margheritas with my girls! We have so much fun eating and talking and could honestly stay out all night if we didn’t have to get home to our little ones, who wake us up at the crack of dawn! I am also so blessed to have my best friend, Rebecca, in my life! We’ve been besties since birth and I couldn’t imagine life without her.
16. How did motherhood change your style?
I feel like motherhood has made me more fearless and has given me an added confidence to try new things and this definitely applies to my style. I’m not afraid to mix very trendy with very classic things and I especially love twinning with Elle! My style is more practical now though. Prior to becoming a mom, I’d carry bags with handles but I’m now all about the cross-body bag! When you’ve got a toddler in one arm and her knapsack in the other, there’s little room for handles! Enter the Celine nano and Givenchy pandora.
17. How did motherhood change your lifestyle?
Motherhood has changed my life in so many ways. I look at Elle and am filled with so much love and awe of this little person whom I created. I feel I was born to be a mom and I get so much fulfilment out of doing so. I recently attended a time-capsule opening at my elementary school. When I was five, I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. My response? A mommy.
In terms of lifestyle though, my priorities have changed. Rather than meeting friends for drinks after dinner and staying up until three am, I’m happiest going to bed at a reasonable hour (I’m still a night-owl though and can’t seem to get off of instagram until midnight!) and getting up with Elle. Our days are spent at music classes, school programs, lunches with friends, dinner with daddy, and then a bedtime story before tucking her into bed, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
18. What has surprised you the most about motherhood?
Lack of sleep!! When we were expecting, new parents would tell me to “sleep now while you can”. Little did I know how true that statement would be! It amazes me how much time I spend dreaming of a good night’s sleep but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Aside from sleep though, what has surprised me the most is just how fiercely I love my child. I would do anything for my little girl and know that my purpose in life is to love her, support her, and be there for her in every way that I can.
