Mara Shachter, Designer, and mother to Nate and Coby, Toronto

1.Who are you and what is your business?

My name is Mara Schachter and I am the founder and creator of Mara Schachter Design. I love challenging convention to redefine how families live in their homes. It’s about more than just beautiful spaces: it’s about creative solutions for living well as a family.

2.How did you get started?

My path to get here wasn’t conventional. I studied theatre in university, worked in advertising in my twenties, had my first son and then began my path in design. Or, more like succumbed to my compulsion for design. I’ve always trusted my gut, knowing that every experience was guiding me to my purpose. My design intuition comes from this same internal instinct and a desire to help people fill their lives with beauty, texture, style and purpose. I feel so grateful to be doing what I love.

3.Did you start your business before of after having kids?

Right after. At the time, my family and friends thought I was a little nuts to start something new…I guess I could see their point! My sons, Nate and Coby, continue to give me the courage to take (calculated!) risks and live in the moment.

4.How did you manage to start a new career and be a mom?

I’ve come to realize there is no magic formula. Everyone is different. For me, it’s been about knowing how I work best, when I work best and designing my life around that and the kids’ schedules. I feel lucky that I can do that. Balance is elusive – every day is its own puzzle to solve.

5.What is the best advice you could give to moms?

Perfectionism is a fallacy. Just like design, the beauty is often in the imperfections.

6.What is your favourite quote?

“Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.”– Cecil Beaton
