Last Tuesday Google launched their Youtube Kids app in Canada. Youtube Kids is a free app that can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or the App Store.

What Kids Will Love: Voice Search

At the launch, hundreds of kids were given the chance to search for content using voice controls. Not only was the voice recognition software specifically designed to better recognize children’s voices, but there were also age-appropriate search results.

What Parents Will Love: More Control

See something you don’t want your child watching? Don’t worry – there are parental controls. You can limit your kid’s viewing to the home screen. Music driving you crazy? You have the option to turn off background music and/or sound effects. One of the app’s coolest features is the time limit option. You can set the app to turn off after a certain amount of time, so you and your child no longer have to argue when it’s time to finish watching videos.

Controversy

Since Youtube Kids is a free app, they make money through advertisements. Some people have complained that some of the advertisements are inappropriate for children. But, officials from Youtube Canada stated that they carefully monitor the ads to make sure that children do not see inappropriate commercials or ads from food and beverage companies.

Integrating the Online and Offline World

Angela Lin, the head of Youtube Kids Canada, stated that the app’s goal is to “connect online viewing with offline activity.” How can you do this with your kids?

Kids can…
– check out some edutubers (educational youtubers)
– watch and recreate some Steve Spangler science experiments
– watch their favourite tv shows and then watch a video that teaches them how to draw their favourite characters
and much more!

Check out the new app and let us know what you think!
